Proposal for the traveller’s trophy

Eligibility

Participation in the Traveller’s Trophy shall be limited to combinations of boats and helms who are members in good standing of the Irish Fireball Class Association.

Members in good standing of other Fireball National Class Associations may contest the Traveller’s Trophy provided they sail the Irish National Championships and the majority of the remaining regattas on the Irish Fireball calendar.

Exclusion

Where the Traveller’s Trophy is to be used as a selection process for either the Irish Sailing Association’s Helmsman’s Championships or any other event, both domestic and  international, only those people who are eligible for the competition for which the selection is required may be selected.

However, the points counting towards selection shall be as determined by the results of those regattas which make up the Traveller’s Trophy and shall not be altered by the removal of “non-Irish” entrants from the scoring of the individual regattas.

Regattas.

  1. The Traveller’s Trophy regattas will normally consist of the three regional regattas, the Leinster, Munster and Ulster Championships, the Open Championships and the Nationals.

  1. The Traveller’s Trophy shall be structured as follows;

a)     The regional regattas and the Open Championships shall have equal status.

b)     The National Championship shall have a weighting of 1.5.

c)     In order to qualify for the Traveller’s Trophy, participation in the Nationals will be compulsory and the result shall not be discardable.

d)     Provided the majority of the balance of the regattas are completed (i.e. three of the four scheduled), a single discard shall apply. If only two or less regattas are completed, both shall count towards the Traveller’s Trophy.

  1. If the scheduling of the Fireball World Championships or European Championships necessitate the addition of one or more regattas to the domestic calendar in order to make the Traveller’s Trophy effective, such regattas will only be added with the prior approval of the Irish Fireball Class at the AGM of the previous year.

Scoring.

  1. For the purpose of the Traveller’s Trophy, the individual regattas shall be scored on the basis of the points total of the individual entries, after discard, as applicable, at each regatta.

  1. The points counting towards the Traveller’s Trophy shall be calculated as follows;

a)     The regional regattas (Leinsters, Munsters and Ulsters) and the Open Championships shall be scored as follows;

1st = 30pts, 2nd = 29pts, 3rd = 28pts, …………28th =3pts, 29th =2pts, 30th =1pt

b)     The points for the Nationals shall be multiplied by a factor of 1.5, giving the following points for places at the Nationals;

1st = 45pts, 2nd = 43.5pts, 3rd = 42pts……28th = 4.5pts, 29th =3pts, 30th =1.5pts.

c)     The winner of the Traveller’s Trophy shall be the combination (boat and helm) with the highest points score after discard as described above.

d)     As described above, competitors in the Traveller’s Trophy shall be required to sail the National Championships, which result shall not be discarded. Provided the majority of the remaining regattas are completed, a single discard shall apply. If only two of the remaining regattas are completed, both shall count towards the Traveller’s Trophy.

e)     If additional regattas are added to the fixture list, as approved by the previous year’s AGM, they shall be scored on an equal basis to the regional regattas and Open Championship. Only the Nationals will have a weighting of 1.5.

Appeals.

Any appeals on the result of the Traveller’s Trophy shall in the first instance be referred to the elected committee of the Irish Fireball Class Association who shall rule on the appeal within 14 days of formal receipt of the appeal.

The decision of the elected committee may also be appealed to an arbitrator who is mutually acceptable to both the appellant and the elected committee of the Irish Fireball Class Association, on the recommendation of the Irish Sailing Association. The arbitrator shall likewise have 14 days after his/her appointment in which to make a ruling which shall be binding on both parties.
