Dublin Bay Sailing Club Committee Boat Sea –U
Notes for the Race Officer
The Race Officer is solely and entirely responsible for the days racing. There is no back up. Check everything yourself.
The Race Team shall consist of the personnel detailed by their Class Captain. The boatman is not a member of the Race Team; he might help you, it is a personal decision.
Ask the Class Captain for the names and contact details of the Race Team personnel. Do not assume that they will turn up, contact them and remind them of their duty.
Be at the assembly point, currently the R St G, at least thirty minutes before the assembly time. Depart on time; ask the Rescue Officer to bring out any late arrivals.
Talk to the Rescue Officer; find out what rescue service is available. Have a debate whether it is better to have three boats and four operators, or two boats and four operators. Discuss the weather and ask for his opinion on sailing conditions.
Use the Club radio, or the Rescue Officers radio, to inform the other Clubs that racing is cancelled. Display the appropriate flags on board Sea -U; inform the West Pier Hut. You may have to go to the Royal Irish and tell the team before they leave the Club.
The Rescue Officer will provide a radio, pre-set to the operating channel (Ch 68) and fully charged. He
may tell you that the Boatman has his own personal radio that you may use. If you borrow a radio from the Rescue Officer remember to return it in person, do not give it to somebody who says that they will "Pass it on". Now nobody knows where it is.
Look for Sea -U and go on board. Check that the boat is fit for use and that the Boatman has loaded the clipboards. Go and fmd the Race Team.
The Boatman is responsible for the safety of the boat, its equipment and personnel. Give him your support, particularly on days when the wind may be suitable but there may be big waves. He will be thinking of the safety of the foredeck /anchor man.
The clipboards, and other office items, are stored in a bag clipped to the inside of the cabin door . Record the sail numbers of boats that intend to race on the Schedule of Starters. This sheet should be filled in for each race. There are three columns, 0ne for each race. Transfer the sail numbers to a Result Sheet, one sheet for each race. If there is a large turnout you may have to use a second clipboard and sheet. Record the sail numbers as the boats go around an adjacent mark. On multi-race days do the best you can. The boats finish at the end of their last lap. Delete the column that is not required. Record the finishers in the appropriate column. Record the finishing time of anything that is an not an IDRA, Flying 15, .When recording times use ~ the time of day they finish (including seconds), i.e. 14/55/12, not elapsed time.
The Boatman will need your assistance in filling in his Boat Log.
Do not lend anything to anybody, they never bring it back. The boatman has been given strict instructions on this subject. If anything is missing make a note on the Boat Log. Make the team tidy away any equipment that they have finished using.
There is a Flag S tied to a length of bamboo on board the Committee Boat. This is in addition to the flag S in the flag box.
Make sure that the recorders have filled all the entries on the Result Sheets. Return the radio to the Rescue Office. Ask the boatman to hand in the Results Sheets. Ensure that all the equipment has been put away, leave the boat clean and tidy; do not leave everything to the boatman. Dismiss the Race Team.
