BC Fireball Association, Victoria, British Columbia
13-05-2006 to 26-05-2006
We are pleased to announce that Victoria, BC will host the 2006
Fireball Worlds.
The sailing area will be the Victoria waterfront, which has predictable
spring winds, minimal current and deep ocean conditions. The Olympic
Mountains provide a spectacular backdrop to the race course, and the
proximity to the city centre provides unlimited social opportunities.
Victoria is a year round tourist destination but it is particularly at
its finest in May with events such as Harbour Festival, Victoria Day
Parade and The Swiftsure International Yacht Race. Conde Nast Traveller
Magazine’s has repeatedly named Victoria "Best City in the Americas"
and Vancouver Island "Best Island in North America."

We hope to see you on the west coast next spring!

- Day 5 summary. [FM] Swiss team Eric and Rudi Moser finally clinched a world title in Victoria, Vancouver yesterday when the final two races of a total of eight were sailed in the Fireball World Championships. Second were Canadian team of Grant Lamont and Tom Egli and third were Aussie husband and wife team Heather MacFarlane and Chris Payne. [CP] Well, surprise surprise another light day :(. It was a little steadier today and that showed in the results with the usual suspects at the front of the fleet. Mosers won the 1st race from Penny and Ian Gibb, who then went on to win the 2nd race with the UK navy boys 2nd.

- Day 1 summary. [Chris Payne] We sat on the beach for a few hours, finally got out in approx 6-7 knots. This built to about 12-14 only to drop on the run to nothing and finally spun and the race was abandoned. [Frank Millar] First day of Worlds (yesterday Sunday) took place in shifting wind, making a joke of the trapezoid course set. Wind initially died and then filled on the right of the reach (actually a near run), favouring those on that side and making idiots of the rest of us. Next leg (reach) turned to beat and then close
reach, committee correctly abandoned race.

- Day 2 summary. [CP] Today we are sitting in the clubhouse with no wind and some rain. It doesn't loook good at all :( we may have to lose the lay day to try and catch up on the sailing.

- Day 3 summary. [CP] Well what a day. Light and fickle winds all day, but we got 3 races in. Heat 1: started nicely but with a major shift to the left made it a one take beat of the port end. Heat 2: Breeze was probably steadier this time. Mosers led pretty much from start to finish. Heat 3: Breeze was really steady, trapezoid course, although the wind stopped on the last run and they had to shorten it.

- Day 4 Summary. [CP] Another light day, but at least this time the wind didn't stop on each race. First race was very light. Rob Levy (Canada) sailed from second to finish first, only to find he was OCS. 2nd race was sailed in a little more pressure (half trapzing). Mosers sailed a great race and won easily. 3rd race was flat out on the wire. According to the race officer the fleet was all over the line, but let it go as it looked even.
