Irish Winter Programme Closes

4 April 2012

The Irish Fireball Frostbite Series, hosted and organized by the Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club, closed in glorious sunshine conditions on 25th March with two races outside the harbour. On the first day of official summer-time, when the clocks in Ireland (and the UK) went forward by an hour, a 17-boat fleet enjoyed near-perfect conditions and a 15knot breeze in sailing the last two races of a series that had started in the dark days of October past.
In contrast to the winter of 2010/11 when we had snow early in December, through Christmas and well into January, if not later, the fleet enjoyed sunshine conditions on some days, very mild conditions on lots of days and sailed all the races planned, though an element of catch-up was achieved by sailing two races on some days when strong wind or the lack of wind (one Sunday) caused races to be cancelled.
In total, 20 races were sailed in two separate Series - pre-Christmas & post Christmas, with 5 discards applying to the overall combined series. In the second Series, sailed since January, a total of 12 races were sailed with 3 discards counted.

Prizes for the 2nd Series and the Overall series were awarded post-racing in the DMYC Clubhouse where thoughts turned to the regatta season which has its first official fixture in May (19th & 20th), but is preceded by two separate training sessions in April, Silver Fleet Training in Clontarf Yacht & Boat Club on Dublin's northside (April 28th) and an Adam Bowers weekend, hosted by DMYC over the preceding weekend, April 21/22.
